This is a weird place. I was B4-ing Italian places around us ( Bunker
Hill) and noticed this place on Westheimer , just outside 8. Was warned
about the decor. Well it did look like middle period
Frank Sinatra... beat with an ugly stick. Gad what an awful floor!
Anyway.... , wine list was minimal, but good enough.
Our salads were great, we both had Oso Boco, pretty good,.
What to say? Ugly looking place with pretty good food.
We were there about 7 on a Sat. , there were only three tables
occupied, one waiter and one bus boy,... they must get a lot of lunch
action, or they are not gonna last.

Haven't been there, but gotta say: they've got one uphill,
boulder-laden mountainous road to hoe.

Pappa La Rossa's bailed out of that space and they did respectable
Italian-American food for years. Manfred Jachmich abandoned his nearby
Tuscan restaurant (the ill-named, but better marketed, Chianti's) a few
month's ago. About 8 years ago, a deep-pocketed Italian Galveston guy,
with close ties to uh...nevermind, opened nearby on Wilcrest, serving
very decent stuff...it soon shuttered. Meanwhile, the chains have moved
in everywhere to battle some good independents; the local demographics
have changed; general "Italian" food doesn't enjoy the cache it once
had, even among the old guard....and shit, if that's the best you can
say, they're tasting the salty sweat of panic on their smiling lips.

That's the former Pappa LaRosa's location, on Westheimer between Walnut Bend
and Lakeside Estates. (I grew up out there, back in the '60s and '70s). The
LaRosas were rooked by the new shopping center landlords, and decided to
expand their facilities in Sugar Land (at the Ice & Sports Center, across
Lexington from First Colony Mall).

As well as I. Briargrove Park, a neighborhood where the teenagers drove the
parents' luxury cars through the A&W on Westheimer, while their folks tooled
around on their ikds old bicycles. I used to hang out with Chester Reed's
kids back then.

Of course, they had to drive all the way in on Westheimer to just east of
where Fountainview is now, since once you got past Hillcroft, the city started
thinning out pretty quickly. (IIRC, one of Chester's brood was in my
graduating class at Lee...Buddy.)

My amigo was Jimmy. I bet you might remember the fun in the parking lot at
Lee after a good rain. Another buddy, when Seagler was a two-lane blacktop
planted his parents' Ford Falcon in the bar ditch in front of Dresser
Industries when he forgot to stop at Westheimer, where Seagler ended.

Ouch...I knew well enough not to park on the empty block (i.e., field) between
Beverly Hill and the brand-new extension of Richmond, and I knew a few of the
cowboys who'd tow the inattentive parkers out of the mud. I always parked on
the Skyline side of the campus...pavement, and a lot closer to Yamin's Po-Boy.
