There used to be a fast food place 30 years ago on Montrose between
Richmond and West Alabama that sold delicious Fried Clams. Is anyone
aware of a restaurant , diner, fast food joint that sells fried clams
(or clam strips)?

Thanks.

Hopefully, someday, someone will run across fried clams somewhere and
post a location. I hate to have to keep making them myself... fast
food is easier. It's hard to believe that in a metropolitan area of
4,000,000 people, thare aren't some fried clams somewhere.

My source up till late last year for my fix was the Captain D's at South
Post Oak and West Bellfort, now gone. Next closest sources I know of are
Long John Silvers - one at S. Post Oak and the Beltway, one at South Main at
OST, and one on 59 S (near Gessner?). Church's Chicken way back when used
to have 'em, and that's when I first got to like 'em, but havent' seen them
in there for years.

Why not just get them from where the restaurants get them:

Frankly, I don't miss them one bit. I spent too many birthday
parties as a kid at Howard Johnson's on AYCE Fried Clam Fridays.

I remember staying in the Howard Johnson's motel in Beaumont in the
70's and the first thing I did every time I checked in there was to
head to the restaurant and order some fried clams.

Not by a long shot, and I love the claim of inventing fried clams, I
seem to have some memory of a Greek cook book from 300 B.C. mentioning
clams fried in olive oil, but I may be missing something earlier from
Highland Anatolia.

I didn't have time when I first saw this post, but noticed that the
restaurant linked in it also sells fried clam "kits" via mail order.
You get a pint of clams... some batter mix and some evaporated milk in
the order. The cost is $80.00. Seems like a lot of money for a pint
of clams and some batter.

Wild Kitchen on Stella Link just inside the Loop has them, as well as
the best hamburgers in the SW area. Their battered fried fish is really
good, so are the onion rings.

Everyone seems to enjoy this place, except for the cleanliness it seems. I
have often passed by and wanted to stop in tho. Maybe I will try it out...

I've eaten at least 10 different items from here (some, like the
battered avocado bites I don't think they have anymore) and none of them
have given me any problems. This includes the burgers and cheeseburgers
(please note I do not ever get lettuce on a burger, as the smell of it
when it touches hot meat is nauseating to me, and the effect if ingested
is far worse from both ends), London style fish, fries, onion rings,
shrimp, oysters, and clams. It is in an old Pizza Hut stand alone
building (anyone remember those?), has a unique odor (not unpleasant,
but odd), and really is just a mom and pop business. You can see some
of the frying from the counter. It looks like a mess, but I've seen
worse (from outside the kitchen and inside it) during production.

Hi Jack,

I saw you posted a while ago about creating a Houston Eats Facebook page. I thought I'd reach out to see if you might be willing to try out a new web application I've built called RoundTable, because it allows you to create local groups that you can share dining reviews and recommendations with.

RoundTable is a social network for dining recommendations, and the main difference between posting to RoundTable versus Facebook or Twitter or the like is that when you make a recommendation on RoundTable it doesn't get lost in a news or tweet feed...it's useful to your friends or the people who care about your opinion forever. You can also poll people in your groups for their favorite places, best restaurants to find a certain dish, and have these recommendations handy every time you are picking a place to eat.

It's a free community and we're in our early stages, but if you might be interested in creating a group or trying it out for folks in the Houston area, I'd love your feedback.

The website is located at www.roundtable.io, and you can email me personally at ***@gmail.com if you are interested in trying it out (right now we are in private beta).

Thank you!
